Calgary and Alberta government officials this week announced a new study aimed at identifying the optimal rail connection and alignment between downtown Calgary and Calgary International Airport.
The 2023 provincial budget allocated CA$3 million to the Calgary Airport Rail Connection Study, which will involve an engineering consultant, city officials said in a press release. Other study partners include Canada Infrastructure Bank, Canadian Pacific Kansas City and various private rail developers.
The study calls for a ridership review and evaluation of various alignment scenarios, city officials said. A request for proposals is ongoing for an engineering consultant. Once selected the consultant is selected, work on the study is expected to begin in October and wrap up in August 2024.
The Calgary City Council will use the study's recommendations to guide long-term transportation and land use planning.
“As Calgary continues to grow, it’s vital to have a roadmap to build out a transit network that increases capacity and supports transportation needs, now and into the future,” said Devin Dreesheen, Alberta's minister of transportation and economic corridors.
