Metra yesterday launched a rider survey to solicit feedback about proposed fare structure changes that would take effect in 2024.
The Chicago commuter-rail agency also scheduled informational sessions at downtown stations for July 19 (Millennium Station) and 26 (Chicago Union Station), and Aug. 1 (LaSalle Street Station) and 2 (Ogilvie Transportation Center). In addition, an online open house will be held on July 25.
Metra aims to create a new fare structure that’s easier to understand, encourages ridership, simplifies onboard collection, and meets financial and technical constraints.
The new fare plan would reduce the number of fare zones to four from 10 and change some fare options. Currently, there are 10 fare zones for one-way and 10-ride tickets. Essentially, there are two zones for weekday day passes and one zone for monthly passes, Saturday, Sunday or holiday day passes and weekend passes, Metra officials said in a fare change summary.
The new fare structure also would implement a bundle of five-day passes, eliminate the 10-ride ticket and incremental fares — the surcharge to travel beyond the zones indicated on a ticket — and change some fare prices.
