The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) will obtain $5.1 billion in Federal Transit Administration (FTA) funding for the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Silicon Valley Phase II Extension.

The federal funding commitment will be the second-largest award in the nation and the largest west of the Hudson River, VTA officials said in a news release. With the funding, the authority has secured nearly all the funding required for the $12.7 billion project.

“This investment underscores the importance of expanding our transit infrastructure and enhancing sustainable transportation options for our community," said VTA Chair Cindy Chavez.

The BART project now has achieved two milestones: acceptance into the federal New Starts engineering and the $5.1 billion funding commitment upon applying for a full funding grant agreement.

VTA’s extension of the regional BART system will further integrate Santa Clara County with the greater BART system in the San Fransisco Bay area.
