Virginia Railway Express (VRE) and the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority (VPRA) have completed a $27.5 million improvement project at the Quantico passenger train station, improving safety, service and rail capacity on VPRA’s Amtrak Virginia state-supported service and VRE’s Fredericksburg Line.

The project called for construction of a pedestrian bridge, a center platform and an extension of an existing platform, giving the station three boarding platform edges. The station house also received new paint, furnishings and display screens, VRE and VPRA officials said in a press release.

The Quantico station improvements are part of a larger VPRA project that is funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation and Virginia and is constructed by CSX. The project adds 9.2 miles of a third mainline track between Arkendale and North Possum Point, improving on time performance for Amtrak and VRE trains, VRE officials said.

The $101.4 million Arkendale project is a part of VPRA’s Transforming Rail in Virginia initiative to expand passenger rail service in Virginia.
