The Massachusetts Department of Transportation last week released its final report of its Northern Tier passenger-rail study.
The study examined the benefits, costs and investments necessary to implement passenger-rail service from North Adams to Greenfield and Boston.
The document will serve as a valuable planning tool to identify service alternatives that can expand rail access, reduce congestion and connect communities across the state, said Massachusetts Transportation Secretary and CEO Monica Tibbits-Nutt in a press release.
Six options for rail service along the corridor were developed and assessed. The options had to address the study's six goals: Promote transportation equity; support economic development along the corridor; and minimize impacts on public health and the environment.
Alternative proposals were developed in three phases, some of which evolved after public and stakeholder input. Low-cost and higher-cost alternatives are presented, as well as an option for electrified service.
