Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) and state government officials this week recognized the completion of the subway T Track improvement program and the removal of slow zones.

Since construction began in 2023, the MBTA has removed more than 220 speed restrictions, replaced over 15,400 feet of full depth track and 38,000 cross ties, installed nearly 251,500 feet of new rail, and performed nearly 325,000 feet of tamping. These upgrades save riders 2.4 million minutes every weekday and generate nearly $1 million in economic benefits every day, MBTA officials said in a press release.

Throughout the year, there were 23 full-access closures across various lines, ranging from weekend closures to weeks for safe and efficient construction. The completion of the program is part of Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey and Lieutenant Gov. Kim Driscoll’s goal of improving reliability and safety across the system, MBTA officials said.

“All MBTA employees played a vital role in moving us one step closer to a state of good repair," said MBTA General Manager Phillip Eng.
