The Virginia Passenger Rail Authority (VPRA) has selected a joint venture for the design-build construction partner for the "south" or second contract package of the Long Bridge project to separate passenger- and freight-rail traffic traveling over the Potomac River.
The joint venture is comprised of Trumbull Corp., Fay, S&B USA Construction and Wagman Heavy Civil Inc., known as the Long Bridge Rail Partners. The north package was awarded to Skanska/Flatiron joint venture in December 2023.
The $2.3 billion Long Bridge project involves construction of a two-track railroad bridge to separate passenger- and freight-rail traffic, and improve trip times and on-time performance for both along the corridor. The present 119-year-old bridge regularly operates at 98% train capacity during peak periods and is a regional chokepoint, VPRA officials said in a press release.
The south package includes construction of the 1.8-mile rail crossing over George Washington Memorial Parkway and the river, a new 16-foot wide bicycle and pedestrian crossing over the road and river and associated retraining walls and embankments. A contract value was not disclosed in the press release.
“The selection of Long Bridge Rail Partners completes the team that will build the largest of our Transforming Rail in Virginia projects, which will significantly change the way Virginians travel,” said VPRA Executive Director DJ Stadtler.
