The Federal Railroad Administration awarded the Connecticut Department of Transportation $11.6 million to increase and extend service along the CTrail Hartford Line, Gov. Ned Lamont and members of the state's congressional delegation announced last week.
Awarded through the FRA's Restoration and Enhancement Program, the funds will be used to expand rail services and improve customer service for riders along the corridor, according to a press release issued by Lamont's office. CTDOT will match the federal dollars with $13.4 million in state funds.
The overall $25 million Hartford Line "expanded and enhancement project" will increase service and reliability across the entire Hartford Line, including the rail stations in New Haven, Hartford, Windsor Locks and Springfield, Massachusetts, state officials said.
When completed, the project will result in one weekday round trip from New Haven to Hartford, addressing a midday service gap of up to three hours; continue previous 2020 funding for the addition of two weekdays trains between New Haven and Springfield; enhance connectivity of the existing rail service along the Northeast Corridor; and increase ridership by 90,000 riders by 2030.
