Caltrain on March 12 began installing lidar and camera-based artificial intelligence solution RailSentry at the Churchill Avenue grade crossing in Palo Alto, California.

Developed by Herzog, the technology uses cameras and lidar to observe an area and alert railroad operators of lingering vehicles or other objects, Caltrain officials said in a press release. The deployment follows the successful installation of RailSentry at the Broadway crossing in Burlingame.

RailSentry data is also used to ensure smooth traffic flow and demonstrate the effectiveness of installed safety improvements by tracking the number of dangerous incidents that occur before and after installing the improvements, Caltrain officials said.
