On June 30, Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) plans to increase fares and reduce service, enabling the agency’s farebox recovery to reach 41.3 percent in fiscal-year 2004 compared with 36.6 percent in FY2003.
One-way subway and light-rail fares will increase from $1.35 to $1.60; day passes, from $3 to $3.50; weekly passes, from $14 to $16.50; and monthly passes, from $54 to $64. MTA expects the fare increases to generate $12 million in additional annual revenue.
The agency already has reduced train and bus service on low ridership lines. Three daily train trips and one bus route were eliminated, saving the agency $2.2 million annually.
