Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) passengers soon will be able to use transit tickets to pay for parking at stations.

Cubic Transportation Systems Inc. was awarded a $2.2 million contract to install an application that would enable passengers to pay for parking with magnetic tickets and smart cards.

Cubic plans to upgrade fare machines so passengers can select a "parking validation" option from an ATM-style menu. The fare-collection systems include operating software, communications, fare gates, and vending and fare machines equipped with Tri-Reader®, a program designed to accommodate all ticketing types.

BART plans to install the new application at Millbrae, South San Francisco and San Bruno stations on BART’s airport extension, and at Daly City and Colma stations.

Since 1999, the agency has ordered $56.5 million worth of multi-application automated fare collection systems from Cubic.
