Canada provides funds to prolong Quebec North Shore's passenger-rail service

Quebec North Shore and Labrador Railway Co. (QNS&L) passengers are guaranteed continued train service between Sept-lles and Schefferville, Quebec, and Labrador City, Newfoundland — at least until November.

Canadian Transportation Minister David Collenette recently announced an extension to an agreement that would provide the railway $955,000 in federal funds to continue providing passenger-rail service for six months. Passenger trains are the only surface-transportation mode with access to Schefferville.

"QNS&L has provided transportation services to Schefferville for 50 years, and I remain committed to working with the federal government and local stakeholders following our decision to terminate services in the region due to the lack of mining operations in the last 20 years," said QNS&L President and Chairman Terry Bowles in a prepared statement, adding that the railway is analyzing passenger-rail alternatives with Canadian and local government officials.

Transport Canada officials believe a third party should provide passenger- and freight-rail services to Schefferville.
