North Carolina Department of Transportation’s rail division recently hired a firm to study rail vehicles and fire safety on the 174-mile Piedmont Passenger Line between Raleigh and Charlotte.

Carter & Burgess Inc. will conduct a fire safety analysis on coaches, two types of locomotives and dome and lounge cars. The study will include possible fire hazards, such as the electrical and braking systems, food service equipment, baggage areas, and oil and hydraulic fluid leaks.

The firm also plans to study the line’s environment, including bridges, industrial facilities along the corridor, grade crossings and hazardous material sites that could impact fire safety.

Expected to be completed July 10, the study is mandated by Federal Railroad Administration.
