The governments of Canada and Ontario plan to provide $435 million each for improvements to GO Transit and York Region Transit’s rail networks.



The investments would enable the transit agencies to increase track capacity to accommodate additional train frequencies, eliminate grade crossings, upgrade existing track and introduce new services to area communities.



About $150 million would be provided for York Transit’s "Quick Start" project, a three-year project designed to implement rapid transit in four corridors across the York Region. York Region Transit would be used to purchase new rapid transit vehicles, construct stations and terminals, and improve rights of way, according to a prepared statement.



Infrastructure investments are expected to attract more than 14 million passengers; reduce road congestion, fuel consumption, and pollution; and improve quality of life, according to the Railway Association of Canada.
