Alcatel Transport Automations Solutions recently received a $75 million contract from BLS AlpTransit AG to engineer, install and deliver railway security and signaling systems for Switzerland’s Lotschberg base tunnel, and the Frutigen and Visp rail stations.



The contract is the largest Alcatel has received from a Switzerland agency. Alcatel plans to install a radio block center, five LockTrac electronic interlocking systems, local control centers and FieldTrac microprocessor-based multiple section axle counters.



Alcatel plans to install the equipment by 2007.



The 21.5-mile tunnel is the core of the Lotschberg base line between Frutigen and St. German, which forms part of the north-to-south Swiss rail corridor through the Alps.
