CTA approves subway telecommunications contract

Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) passengers soon will be able to access the wireless world while riding the subway.

The authority awarded an $11.2 million contract to Aldridge Electric Inc. to install a wireless telecommunications system in subway tunnels, underground stations and station passageways.

The system would enhance CTA’s two-way radio system and improve redundant subway communication options for CTA, and Chicago’s police and fire departments. It also would enable CTA to contract the service to area wireless service providers, so passengers could use cell phones, email, wireless Internet, paging and text messaging throughout the system, according to a prepared statement.

The project is scheduled to begin in the spring and take 18 months to complete.
