Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) security patrol officers soon will have better control over key transit stations.



For a six-month trial period, the authority plans to use Segway™ Human Transporters (HTs) at three stations. The electric-powered personal mobility devices are designed to enable security officers to patrol an area three times faster than officers on foot, and raise security officers’ profile eight inches, according to a prepared statement.



"Personal mobility devices will surely play a part in our transportation future, and we want to be among the first in evaluating these technologies," said MTA Chief Operating Officer Roger Snoble.



The devices will be evaluated on the authority’s rail and bus lines at the Regional Rebuild Center, Rosa Parks and Union Station — large complexes where quick movement from one location to another is needed, MTA said.



Segway HTs can travel up to 12.5 mph, with a range up to 15 miles, on a rechargeable battery.
