Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) is considering service cuts and layoffs to make up for a projected $23.7 million decline in sales tax revenue, and yet maintain acceptable service levels.



Several cuts are targeted for the fiscal-year 2004 budget, such as decreasing off-peak train frequency, reducing service on 100 bus routes and delaying light-rail expansions another year beyond the already approved two-year delay. DART also might cut more than 400 jobs agency-wide.



DART already eliminated more than $12 million from its FY 2003 budget and $4 billion from its 20-year financial plan. The agency expects to identify another $48 million in savings for the FY 2004 budget, which is scheduled for approval in September.
