On Jan. 15, a joint venture comprising Power Corp. of Canada, China National Railway Locomotive & Rolling Stock Industry Corp. and Bombardier Transportation delivered the first 22 of a 300-car order from China's Ministry of Railways.

China's Ministry of Railways placed the order with Bombardier Sifang Power (Qingdao) Transportation Ltd. in 1999. The 22 high-grade intercity cars, which can reach 99 mph, were produced at the joint venture's facility in Qingdao, Shandong and delivered to Shanghai Railways Administration Bureau, which ultimately will receive 70 cars; the remainder will be delivered to the Beijing, Shenyang, Zhengzhou and Guangzhou bureaus.

Bombardier Sifang Power is the only joint venture between a Chinese company and foreign partners producing intercity passenger cars in China, according to a prepared statement.
