On Feb. 21, New Jersey Transit’s board advanced four projects by:



• Approving a $22.6 million tunnel project extending the Newark City subway between Newark Penn and Newark Broad Street stations, connecting six commuter-rail lines and providing improved access to downtown;

• Authorizing a long-term lease and sublease agreement with Union Township, bringing the agency’s new Union Station on the Raritan Valley one step closer to its April opening. The agreement paves the way for NJ Transit to use its 467-space parking lot at the station. The $27 million, 3,000-square-foot station includes a pedestrian tunnel, center island high-level platform, and an elevator to access the platform and commuter parking lots;

• Awarding a $1.7 million contract to ThyssenKrupp Elevator Corp. to renovate and modernize nine escalators at Newark Penn Station. The escalator renovations are part of a customer service and capacity plan to meet the growing demand for passenger rail service, according to a prepared statement; and

• Awarding a $3.86 million contract to Northeast Construction to make Morristown Train Station handicapped accessible. The agency plans to construct two mini high-level platforms, install elevators linking the pedestrian tunnel with the platforms, perform structural repairs to the tunnel and improve two restrooms.
