On Nov. 7, California Transportation Commission (CTC) approved $3.3 million for North County Transit District (NCTD) to complete the $6.2 million Encinitas Passing Track Project.



Currently, Amtrak, Coaster commuter rail and Burlington Northern Santa Fe use the Los Angeles-to-San Diego corridor, which is the second-busiest intercity passenger rail corridor in the country, according to a prepared statement.



Officials anticipate building the passing track along the 6.6-mile single-track segment in Encinitas, Calif., will eliminate delays caused when trains wait for other trains from the opposite direction to clear the tracks.



Encinitas officials supported NCTD’s funding application before CTC. In return, NCTD plans to support the city’s efforts to obtain funds for pedestrian crossings and other future rail improvements. Caltrans plans to apply to CTC for funds to do preliminary work on these potential projects.



NCTD plans to begin constructing the passing track in July.
