New Mexico government agencies mull options for commuter-rail extension

The New Mexico Department of Transportation and Mid-Region Council of Governments recently narrowed alignment options for extending Rail Runner Express service from four to two.

The extension could either be built in the median of I-25 or run south of and parallel to I-25. The government agencies will review the two options at an upcoming public meeting.

The agencies plan to extend the 46-mile Belen-to-Bernalillo commuter-rail line — which opened in July — between Albuquerque and Santa Fe by 2008. The extension would connect existing track at the base of La Bajada Hill with existing track at Interstate 25.
