On Sept. 22, Caltrain is implementing a new fare structure and proof-of-payment system.

The changes are designed to streamline Caltrain’s fare-collection process and create six, 13-mile zones, compared with the agency’s previous nine zones of varying lengths, according to a prepared statement.

Under the new fare structure, one-way tickets are valid for four hours from the time of sale. Ten-ride tickets are valid for 60 days but must be stamped before boarding. A new zone upgrade ticket enables passengers to upgrade any ticket to ride beyond their normal destination without repaying the full base fare, and a new day pass replaces round-trip and weekend passes, enabling unlimited rides within designated zones until the day’s last train service.

The youth discount has expanded from 11 to 17 years old. Senior, disabled and youth discount tickets are available in one-way, day pass, 10-ride and monthly tickets.

Under the proof-of-payment system, Caltrain no longer will sell tickets onboard trains. Passengers without a valid ticket could be issued a citation up to $250.

Caltrain began preparing for the new system in 2000, when the agency started installing ticket vending machines in stations.
