APTA guides address transit workforce development

The American Public Transportation Association this week released the first set of guides to help transit agencies address workforce development, recruitment and retention.

The guides focus on advancing awareness of transit careers; creating internships and apprenticeships; recruiting and hiring transit workers; serving the underserved in the workforce; onboarding, training and retaining workers; and building a transit curriculum.

An APTA-conducted survey in October 2022 found that 96% of U.S. transit agencies are experiencing workforce challenges, including worker recruitment and retainment, APTA officials said in a press release. Of those, 84% said the shortages are impacting the ability to provide service.

"APTA recognizes the impact the worker shortage crisis is having on our industry and has been working diligently to provide resources to help transit leaders create effective strategies to attract, retain and develop a skilled workforce," said APTA President and CEO Paul Skoutelas in a press release.

The guides are available via the association's online learning platform, APTAU.

The guides are built on APTA's 2021 Transit Workforce Readiness Guide, which provides transit executives with recommendations on how to recruit, retain and train workers, form outreach and internship programs and evaluate hiring practices, according to the APTA website.
