The American Public Transportation Association yesterday announced the winners of its 2022 Rail Safety and Security Excellence Awards at its annual rail conference in San Diego, California.

The awards are based on four criteria: effectiveness, benefit level, innovation and transferability. The top honor is the Gold Award, which is presented to transit agencies with the best overall example of a safety or security program. A Certificate of Merit is awarded to agencies to recognize exceptional achievements in safety or security.

“I want to congratulate those being honored for their contributions to the industry. Their work provides the bulwark that makes public transportation more efficient and safer for their passengers, employees and communities nationwide," said APTA President and CEO Paul Skoutelas in a press release.

This year's winners are:

• for safety excellence: the British Columbia Rapid Transit Co. Ltd. of Vancouver, Canada, received the Gold Award; and the New Orleans Regional Transit Authority of Louisiana received the Certificate of Merit; and

• for security excellence: the Miami-Dade County Department of Transportation and Public Works, Miami-Dade Transit of Miami, Florida, received the Gold Award; and the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, Washington, D.C., received the Certificate of Merit.
