The award reflects Metro Transit's achievements between 2013 and 2015, including
growing ridership, expanding access, advancing sustainability and overall success in system safety, agency officials said in a press release.

Metro Transit was selected among North American transit agencies that provide more than 20 million annual passenger trips.

"This award confirms what the thousands of Minnesotans who rely on transit already know: Metro Transit delivers consistent, high-quality service," said Minnesota Lt. Gov. Tina Smith. "This recognition is well deserved, and an important reminder that Minnesota needs to continue to expand and improve transit services if we want our economy to stay strong."

Metro Transit experienced its highest ridership in 30 years following the opening of the Green Line light-rail route in 2014.

The agency's safety-related accomplishments include growth in its police department, enhanced operator training and highly visible safety campaigns.

Also yesterday, Metro Transit unveiled a new decal to be placed on all trains and buses that highlights the award.

Next month, the agency will receive the award at APTA's annual conference in Los Angeles.
