The Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County, Texas (METRO) recently received $3 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Transit Security Grant Program (TSGP) funding to help boost security.
METRO’s police department will use proceeds to hire 10 police officers and obtain canines trained to detect explosives.
“This money will help us get more officers on the force to help with our day-to-day operations, such as conducting random patrols, which help deter terrorism and reduce crime,” said METRO Assistant Chief of Police Tim Kelly in a prepared statement.
METRO was one of 15 transit agencies that obtained $78 million in TSGP funding from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Proceeds can be used to hire new police officers or anti-terrorism personnel, purchase anti-terrorism equipment, and acquire and train canines for explosives detection.
