New York City Transit Authority has selected a Siemens Transportation Systems Inc.-led consortium for its Division A Automatic Train Supervision (ATS) system project, valued at more than $100 million.

Part of NYC Transit’s 2000 - 2004 capital program, the ATS project would provide train identification and location information to a centralized command center, providing accurate real-time information to staff and passengers.

Siemens will be responsible for the control center, including hardware and software development, and consortium oversight.

Additional joint-venture members include RWKS Comstock, which will be responsible for installation; and Union Switch & Signal Inc., which will be responsible for waysides, including field design, field code units and associated manufacturing.

On some lines, NYC Transit plans to use ATS as an overlay to the existing signals. Concurrently, the Rail Control Center will be equipped with dispatcher controls and the system’s central computer hardware and software.

On other lines already scheduled for signal replacement, NYC Transit plans to install a communications-based train control (CBTC) system, with replacement of fixed-block signaling beginning in the agency’s 2005 - 2009 capital program.
