Amtrak Cascades surpassed ridership records in second quarter

Amtrak Cascades surpassed monthly and quarterly ridership records in the second quarter after a trying first quarter, Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) officials said in a prepared statement.

Ridership in April, May and June between Vancouver, British Columbia, and Eugene, Ore., soared 8 percent to 231,194 passengers compared with the same 2010 period. The service posted the highest second-quarter totals since it began in 1994.

Ridership rebounded after declining 10 percent in the first quarter, when an unusually high number of mudslides caused service cancellations, WSDOT officials said.

“Demand is high for a convenient, affordable and car-free transportation option, and Amtrak Cascades fits the bill,” WSDOT Secretary Paula Hammond said.
