Amtrak, NJ Transit issue report on service disruptions

Amtrak and New Jersey Transit have released a joint report on recent service-disruption issues.

In June, Amtrak and NJ Transit met with New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy and announced a series of actions focused on infrastructure and fleet systems, following a spike of service disruptions in New Jersey and New York Penn Station during May and June.

Amtrak and NJ Transit outlined immediate actions that both companies will take together to address this issue. This includes issuing regular reports that will include details of our efforts and progress to date, as well as information regarding root causes as they are identified, according to an Amtrak news release.

The first of these reports summarizes the reporting period of July 6 through Aug. 9. According to the report, during that time, Amtrak and NJ Transit have increased examination, inspection, maintenance and improvement activities involving various infrastructure and fleet systems following a spike in Northeast Corridor (NEC) disruptions in May and June.

These efforts focused on Amtrak infrastructure, including the catenary, signals, power substations and track; and NJ Transit rolling stock, including the pantograph which rides along the catenary and draws power to move trains, and infrastructure with connections to Amtrak’s NEC.
