Ridership on Amtrak’s San Joaquin corridor in California reached 1 million in fiscal-year 2011, the first time ridership topped the million mark on the route, Amtrak officials said in a prepared statement.
Ridership rose 6.7 percent year over year in FY2011, which ended June 30. The corridor also set a monthly ridership record during the fiscal year, with 104,933 riders in July.
“The success of this corridor is a result of Amtrak’s strong partnership with the state of California,” said Emmett Fremaux, Amtrak vice president of marketing and product development. “Working with Caltrans, Amtrak has implemented the improvements to the service that have helped boost ridership throughout the region.”
In addition, annual ridership for the three state-supported routes — San Joaquin, Pacific Surfliner and Capitol Corridor — collectively set a new high-water mark, Amtrak officials said. The three routes transported a combined 5.6 million passengers, up 6.1 percent compared with FY2010.
The California Department of Transportation contributes $90 million in operating assistance annually to the intercity passenger-rail service in California and parts of Nevada.
