Amtrak adds service, reduces fares on Springfield Line

Amtrak passengers traveling in the Connecticut Valley soon will see more frequent service and pay reduced fares.

On April 28, the national passenger railroad plans to begin offering 16 weekday trains — eight in each direction — compared with the current 11 on the Springfield, Mass.-to-New Haven, Conn., line. Amtrak officials expect the change to generate new ridership, according to a prepared statement.

On weekdays, a new 7:15 a.m. train would depart from Springfield, and several extra departures would fill a five-hour gap in the northbound direction.

Amtrak also began offering lower fares to Springfield Line passengers. One-way and monthly fares have been reduced up to 50 percent.
