Amtrak is among the U.S. railroads participating in an industry-wide effort to hire at a combined total of 5,000 military veterans in 2012. Since January, more than 14 percent of the national intercity passenger railroad’s new hires have served in the armed forces, Amtrak officials announced on Tuesday.

Amtrak currently employs more than 1,500 military veterans and is a member of the Employer Partnership of the Armed Forces program. The railroad recruits at numerous military job fairs across the country.

“The success of our railroad depends on our employees, and military service members bring skills that emphasize quality and productivity, resulting in a better experience for our customers,” said Amtrak Chairman Tom Carper, a Vietnam War veteran.

Amtrak offers former military personnel a variety of career opportunities in both operational and nonoperational posts.
