Several Southern California passenger-rail services issued service alerts in response to the deadly wildfires in Los Angeles County. Both the Eaton fire, which began in the Eaton Canyon in Altadena, and the Palisades fire, named for its destruction of the Pacific Palisades neighborhood in Los Angeles, began Jan. 7.
The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection confirmed 13 fatalities and over 40,000 acres burned as of this morning, but national media outlets have reported as many as 24 people have died.
On Jan 11 and 12, Amtrak suspended all service on its Pacific Surfliner route between San Diego and Los Angeles and moved the origination point of its Coast Starlight route from Los Angeles to Emeryville, it announced in a post on social media platform X.
The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (L.A. Metro) issued service alerts for several bus lines, but as of this morning, all rail lines are running regular service, according to an alert active on the transportation authority's website. Additionally, the authority has slashed all fares systemwide. An interactive map on the L.A. Metro website provides updated information about rail system evacuation notices.
On Jan. 10, Foothill Gold Line Extension Construction Authority issued an update on Jan. 10 confirming that construction continued on the Glendora to Pomona extension project over the week, despite the regional wildfires.
