Amtrak Aug. 2 opened a Mail and Express transloading facility in Jeffersonville, Ind.



The facility boasts a transfer dock with 4,000 square feet of covered space, ten truck docks designed to enable simultaneous loading of six Amtrak express box cars, and an electronic truck scale and track designed to accommodate placement of 10 Roadrailer® units.



Louisville and Indiana Railroad (L&I) constructed the facility and plans to provide switching services.



"We are pleased to be a part of a healthy and effective partnership between Amtrak and the nation’s freight railroads," said L&I Chairman Peter Gilbertson in a prepared statement. "Local businesses taking advantage of Amtrak’s Mail and Express services will be pleased with the capabilities and efficiencies of the new facility in Jeffersonville.



Amtrak began its Kentucky Cardinal daily service Dec. 18, 1999, after a 20-year absence of passenger rail in the Louisville area. In the 16 months since it opened, the service has carried more than 45,000 passengers, experiencing steady ridership and revenue growth.
