With the current phase of work on the Lancaster Station project in Pennsylvania nearing completion, Amtrak officials have announced details of the next phase of station improvements.

The first phase of the three-phase “Capstone project” includes short-term work items to be completed by Amtrak forces. Design work is under way, and in the next several weeks, work is slated to begin on the restoration of passenger areas, such as benches, doorways and archways, Amtrak officials said in a prepared statement.

The second phase of work, which involves a standard design-bid-build project delivery, will include lighting upgrades, HVAC replacement and platform canopy repairs, they said.

The third phase will be completed under the Amtrak Accessible Stations Development Program to make the station accessible to all riders. This aspect of the project began in early January with survey work. Construction is expected to begin in mid-2013, Amtrak officials said.

Lancaster Station serves Amtrak’s Keystone service (Harrisburg-Philadelphia-New York City) and the Pennsylvanian service (Pittsburgh-Harrisburg-Philadelphia-New York City).

During fiscal-year 2011, the facility was the third-busiest Amtrak station in Pennsylvania and the 22nd-busiest in the national network, Amtrak officials said.
