All three of Amtrak’s California trains reported record ridership for fiscal-year 2003’s second quarter, with combined ridership up 18.5 percent in the year’s first half compared with the same 2002 period.
Pacific Surfliner ridership rose 29.2 percent, with 507,268 passengers traveling along the San Diego-to-Los Angeles route; San Joaquins route ridership increased 12.7 percent, with 170,990 passengers riding between Bakersfield, Sacramento and Oakland, Calif.; and Capitol Corridor ridership was up 6.3 percent, with 285,420 passengers traveling between Sacramento and the Bay area.
Ridership spiked because of recent increases in service, aggressive marketing efforts and the high cost of other transportation modes, according to a prepared statement.
