If VIA Rail Canada Inc. and the Canadian Auto Workers Union don’t reach a contract agreement by midnight on July 22, the union plans to launch a strike. That’s what union officials told the agency in a strike notice issued yesterday.

CAW and VIA Rail have been negotiating a contract the past several weeks with the assistance of two federal conciliators.

CAW represents 2,600 VIA Rail workers, including on-board service and skilled trade employees, and ticket agents.
