Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) in San Francisco and the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County (METRO) in Houston, Texas, today added rail service as ridership begins to tick up as stay-at-home restrictions are lifted in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
BART has added three trains to the morning and afternoon commute on the Yellow Line between Pleasant Hill to Daly City.
With the new schedule, BART continues to maintain current base train frequencies of 30 minutes on weekdays, 20 minutes on Saturdays and 24 minutes on Sundays due to low ridership levels as a result of COVID-19, BART officials said in a press release.
To meet rider demand, METRO has increased its light-rail service to operate every 18 minutes on the Purple and Green lines, and every six minutes on the Red Line. On the weekends, the Red Line will operate every 12 minutes.
Also today, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority began requiring its riders to wear face coverings on trains to help slow the spread of the coronavirus.
Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has required face coverings on its system since April. The agency announced yesterday that 92 percent of MTA New York City Transit subway riders wore face coverings between May 28 and June 4.
The goal is 100 percent of riders, MTA officials said in a press release.
To meet that goal, the agency today began distributing masks to riders who need them. Two million masks have been provided by New York State and NYC officials.
