BART adopts 'Buy America' policy

Bay Area Rapid Transit’s (BART) board recently adopted a policy that will give preference to rail-car manufacturers that create jobs in the United States.
The board’s action makes BART the nation’s first transit system to adopt a “Buy America” policy, BART officials said in a prepared statement.
The board approved the policy in preparation for BART’s $3 billion “Fleet of the Future” train replacement program.
“The policy mirrors the economic goals of federal lawmakers,” said BART President Bob Franklin. “It will also transfer rail-car technology to the U.S.”
The Buy America policy will score bids for federally funded procurements by using a formula that considers a product’s domestic makeup. The policy will go into effect on Jan. 1, BART officials said.
