Bay Area Rapid Transit officials last week announced they've selected BRIDGE Housing Corp. as the developer for the North Berkeley Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) project.

BART and BRIDGE signed a two-year exclusive negotiating agreement for the TOD that would be built on 5.5 acres of BART-owned property surrounding the North Berkeley Station, BART officials said in a press release. Initial development plans call for construction of 500 to 1,200 homes, some of which would be affordable housing.

The Berkeley City Council in 2021 pledged $53 million to the project, BART officials said.

A nonprofit builder of affordable housing, BRIDGE will work with developers East Bay Asian Local Development Corp., Berkeley Food and Housing Project and AvalonBay on the project. East Bay and AvalonBay have performed previous work on BART TOD projects at Lake Merritt and Pleasant Hill stations, respectively.

The BRIDGE team is expected to seek public input on its preliminary plan for TOD in early 2023. The first phase of construction is anticipated to begin in 2025.
