BART begins to build East Contra Costa County extension
advertisement
Last week, Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) broke ground on the East Contra Costa County, or eBART, extension.
The 10-mile line will be constructed in the median of Highway 4 from Pittsburgh/Bay Point Station to the city of Antioch. The $462 million corridor is being built in coordination with the Highway 4 widening project. The agency will operate diesel multiple units along the line rather than conventional BART trains; it would have cost more than $1 billion to extend service using traditional electric train technology, according to the agency.
“Nothing about eBART precludes construction of conventional BART in the future, given adequate ridership and funding,” said BART board member Gail Murray in a prepared statement.
