The Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) board recently signed off on a key contract for the 5.4-mile, $890 million extension to the Warm Springs district of Fremont, Calif.
The agency awarded a $136 million contract to a Shimmick Construction Co. Inc./Skanska USA Civil West California District Inc. joint venture to complete the Fremont Central Park Subway portion of the project. The firms will build the trackway embankment south of Walnut Avenue and the BART subway from just north of Stevenson Boulevard, through Fremont Central Park — including a portion of Lake Elizabeth — and beneath Union Pacific Railroad tracks.
The contract also calls for constructing two ventilation structures and relocating a number of Fremont Central Park amenities, including a dog park, basketball courts and parking lots.
Construction is expected to begin in summer and take more than three years to complete. BART expects to award a design-build contract for the remaining portion of the project, including track, systems and a new Warm Springs Station.
