Rail News: Passenger Rail
Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) is celebrating a golden event. Yesterday, the agency marked its 50th anniversary.
BART was created on June 4, 1957, by the California State Legislature and then-Gov. Goodwin Knight to handle the influx of people moving to the Bay area after World War II.
Later this year, the agency will mark another milestone: 35 years of train operations. The agency launched heavy-rail service on Sept. 11, 1972, and since has carried more than 1 billion passengers.
