BART presents preliminary FY2004 budget

Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) recently unveiled a preliminary $460.7 million fiscal-year 2004 operating budget, which includes proposed cuts and a fare increase.
The budget would provide $396.5 million for basic service and funds to operate the new BART/SFO line. The agency needs to make up a $38.8 million shortfall from a revenue decline in FY2003 ridership projections and increased expenses.
The budget proposes eliminating 126 positions, although BART expects to transfer many of those positions to the BART/SFO line, and lose others through current vacancies and attrition, according to a prepared statement.
