Tomorrow, the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) board will consider options to make up a nearly $50 million budget shortfall projected for fiscal-year 2010, which begins July 1.

The agency projects passenger and sales tax revenue, which make up about 85 percent of its operating funds, to decline in the coming year. In addition, the state recently eliminated transit funding for FY2010.

To overcome the deficit, BART officials are proposing to reduce expenses, which "could come in the form of labor and non-labor cuts and/or service adjustments," according to the agency. BART also might raise fares and parking fees, and dip into reserves.

The agency plans to further discuss and obtain public comment on the spending plan in April and May.
