Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) contracted crews this spring will begin construction of a seven-year project to install 22 canopies over BART rail station entrances along Market Street in San Francisco, agency officials announced last week.
The canopies will protect new escalators and feature retractable gates, LED lighting, security cameras and real-time digital displays showing train arrival times.
“The canopies will not only protect the new escalators from the wear-and-tear of elements like rain and wind-swept debris, but they will provide an added layer of station security and cleanliness through motorized gates that allow the entrances to be locked at street level when stations are closed,” BART officials said in a press release.
Added protection from an existing canopy in Oakland has reduced escalator down time by about 30 percent.
Initially, BART will fund the installation of 19 canopies for $64 million through Measure RR, San Francisco Prop A, and state Prop 1A funds. Three more canopies will be installed once BART identifies additional funding, BART officials said.
No more than one entrance will be under construction at each station at one time in order to reduce access impacts to stations.
