Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) Jan 2 named Nathaniel Ford Sr. general manager and chief executive officer — the agency’s fifth GM but first African-American in its 36-year history — to manage the agency’s $331 million operating budget and guide its 4,800-member staff.

Ford joined MARTA in 1997 as senior vice president of operations and development, overseeing operations, facilities maintenance, development, quality assurance and police services departments, and providing executive leadership to more than 4,000 professionals. He oversaw a $252 million operating budget and more than $1 billion in capital grant programs, as well as the construction of Sandy Springs and North Springs rail stations, which opened Dec. 16.

Prior to joining MARTA, Ford held management positions at New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) and San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit System (BART), comprising more than 18 years of transit industry experience.
