U.K. train operator Connex South Eastern awarded Bombardier Transportation a contract valued at $355 million for 180 Suburban Electrostar cars and a 30-year maintenance agreement, according to a statement prepared July 24.
The Electrostar portion of the contract is valued at $206 million and brings the total number of Electrostar-derived products ordered by Connex to 618 cars. Bombardier plans to manufacture the cars at its Derby, U.K., facility and deliver them in five-car units from July 2004 through that year’s end.
The cars would be adapted for South London operation and provide Connex enough cars to ensure the operating company can replace all slam-door rolling stock in accordance with current legislation.
The maintenance portion of the contract (valued at $149 million) will be carried out by a joint venture comprising Bombardier and Connex, South Eastern Train Maintenance Ltd. Under terms, Bombardier will provide technical support and material supplies; Connex, the workforce.
The joint venture plans to perform the work at Connex’s Slade Green depot in the South London area.
