Bombardier Transportation Sept. 20 confirmed a $296 million order from GOVIA for 240 Electrostar electrical multiple units to replace slam-door trains on several key South Central routes in the United Kingdom.

GOVIA is a UK-based holding company jointly owned by Go-Ahead plc and Keolis of France. The company acquired Connex South Central Limited in August and since has taken over management and running of the franchise.

The Electrostar units are gangwayed and carpeted throughout, designed to enhance passenger security and comfort, and offer increased capacity.

Bombardier plans to manufacture the units in Derby, U.K.; the company’s Vasteras, Sweden, plant would provide propulsion, train control and communications. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2002.
